Panama's largest private reserve
Punta Patiño Private Nature Reserve
our priority
Protecting the Heart of Panamanian Biodiversity
The Punta Patiño Private Nature Reserve (RNPPP) is located in the Pacific region of Darien. It is the first private nature reserve created in the Republic of Panama, in an effort by ANCON to safeguard one of the regions with the most representative samples of tropical forest in Panama.
we conserve
A refuge for Panama's biodiversity
To protect the natural wealth and biodiversity of the Chocó-Darién eco-region, which unfortunately faces a series of threats such as colonisation, deforestation and other challenges typical of remote and frontier areas. ANCON established the Punta Patiño Private Nature Reserve in 1993. It covers 30,000 hectares comprising mature secondary forests and primary rainforests, as well as a large area of mangroves in the Gulf of San Miguel, declared a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention in 1993.
we conserve
A natural lung for Panama and the world
The Reserve absorbs approximately 180,000 tons of CO2 (carbon dioxide) per year, making it a lung for Panama and the world. Protecting it requires an important effort as we must work every day to mitigate the threats it faces such as illegal logging, the expansion of the agricultural frontier, forest fires, hunting and the most important challenge, the lack of income opportunities for the Darienite populations living in the reserve. We work to involve the communities by improving their quality of life and teaching them how to protect the reserve, conserving and producing at the same time.
our priority
How we protect the Reserve
We carry out constant patrolling
In order to contribute to the conservation of the Reserve, ANCON has a team of forest rangers in charge of the surveillance and maintenance necessary for the preservation of the flora and fauna of the Reserve, through permanent patrols to minimise the exploitation of natural resources that may occur in an unsustainable manner.
We carry out environmental monitoring
We provide environmental education to communities
volunteering
Volunteer tourism
We have a volunteer programme for schools, companies, universities, professionals and scientists, both national and international, which facilitates the experience of living with the communities and providing social work for nature conservation. As part of our projects and initiatives we carry out field visits, for short periods, very enriching in academic and scientific environments.
