REDUCE, REUSE AND RECYCLE

national clean-up of beaches, coasts and rivers

Cleaner Panama

We invite all citizens to participate in this activity, so that together we can protect our oceans and conserve their biodiversity, for the sake of marine species and for our own sake.

The beach of Costa del Este

The Costa del Este beach is next to the mouth of the Matias Hernandez river, which carries waste from the middle and lower basin, which increases in volume after torrential rains. Among the most relevant items collected were 25,031 plastic bottles, 1,516 cans, 129 tyres and some 1,700 plastic bags. There were car parts, large quantities of foam (which cannot be collected because it shreds and is considered even worse than plastic), household appliances, toys, children's cars, textiles, among other waste. This figure calls for the development of an integrated waste management system that includes recycling systems at the national level, and for greater sanctions to be applied to those who do not comply with existing regulations.

Trade Alliance Corporation Volunteers

This clean-up included a number of "game-like" activities that served to emphasise the environmental problem posed by the improper disposal of waste that ends up in the oceans. The participants were asked to find different plastic objects, ranging from toys to sanitary equipment, and in just a few seconds several volunteers had already collected multiple objects, most of which were small in size. In this way they were able to see first-hand how plastic dominates the waste and how it degrades into small fragments, even microplastics, which are imperceptible to marine animals.

In total, the volunteers managed to collect and remove about two tonnes of rubbish from the beach, and as usual, among the predominant materials were plastic objects: plastic bags and plastic bottles, objects that are estimated to take more than 100 years to degrade.
